On just about every kitchen table, in the States, you have a salt and (black) pepper shaker. In Bulgaria, it is a bit different. The photo above is of a hand-crafted condiment holders or condiment cellar.  One cellar would have table salt (typically not free running), one would have paprika and the final would have a spice called ‘Merudia’.  This is a blend of dried spices and herbs that varies from town to town. Typically it is made from a combination that can include cumin, savory, fenugreek, thyme, paprika, oregano, marjoram, red pepper and a bit of salt.  Sometimes the center will be hollow and have a place to put toothpicks.
